Small business payments have been stuck for a long time. Invoices arrive by mail, checks get written by hand, and reconciliation happens manually, if at all. The tools that transformed consumer payments over the past decade largely passed SMBs by, in part because the problem is harder than it looks. Small businesses can't force their suppliers onto new platforms: they need to work with vendors who still expect checks, landlords who won't accept credit cards, and accountants who live in QuickBooks.
Melio built for that reality. Their platform lets a small business pay any vendor digitally, even vendors who only accept checks. The business gets a modern payment experience; the vendor receives payment however they want. And because Melio integrates directly with accounting software, reconciliation is automatic.
Melio's founding team brought complementary strengths to a deceptively hard problem:
● Matan Bar, the CEO, had deep experience in fintech and a clear vision for what small business payments should look like.
● Ilan Atias and Ziv Paz brought the technical expertise to build infrastructure that could bridge incompatible systems without asking anyone to change their behavior.
● The team, split across New York and Tel Aviv, grew to serve 80,000 customers and process over $30 billion in payments annually.

Joining Xero
Xero's $2.5 billion acquisition, completed in October 2025, gives the cloud accounting giant a powerful payments layer for the U.S. market. Matan Bar will lead Xero's combined U.S. business, bringing Melio's approach to an even larger base of small businesses worldwide.
